Machu Picchu 2025 Routes and Restrictions

Machu Picchu remains one of the most iconic travel dreams in the world. This Peruvian archaeological treasure welcomes thousands of visitors each year, eager to experience its history, landscapes, and mysticism. To preserve the sanctuary and ensure safety, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture has implemented new routes, circuits, and restrictions for 2025.

If you are planning your visit, here is everything you need to know based on official sources to organize your adventure smoothly.

The Three Main Circuits and Their Routes

Since June 2024, Machu Picchu has operated under a system of three main circuits, which together include ten specific visiting routes. In 2025, this organization continues to be the only official way to explore the citadel.

Circuit 1: Panoramic

Includes access to Machu Picchu Mountain, upper terraces, Intipunku (Sun Gate), and the Inka Bridge. Some of these routes are only available during the high season.

Circuit 2: Classic

Known as the most complete experience, it allows access to lower terraces and carefully designed walking paths that provide a comprehensive view of the site.

Circuit 3: Royalty

Includes routes to Waynapicchu, the Great Cavern, and Huchuy Picchu, offering unique perspectives and more adventurous climbs.

Important: Each ticket is linked to a specific circuit, and visitors are not allowed to switch once inside. Choosing your route during the booking process defines your entire experience.

Key Restrictions in 2025

To protect Machu Picchu and improve the visitor experience, several rules and restrictions apply this year: Increased visitor capacity during high season. From June to November, the daily limit has risen from 4,500 to 5,600 visitors. This helps distribute crowds more efficiently while protecting the site.

Routes available only in high season. Special routes, such as Intipunku or the Great Cavern, are only open during peak months. Annual closure of the Inca Trail

As every year, the 2-day and 4-day Inca Trail was closed in February 2025 for conservation and maintenance work. Temporary closures for safety. During the rainy season (January–March), routes like Machu Picchu Mountain and Waynapicchu may be closed due to landslides or weather risks.

Personal and non-transferable tickets. Tickets are issued with a fixed schedule and circuit. They are personal, non-transferable, and cannot be exchanged once purchased.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Book months in advance, especially if you are traveling during the high season. Double-check which circuit is included in your ticket before purchasing. Always verify official announcements from the Ministry of Culture regarding temporary closures. Bring comfortable shoes, lightweight rain gear, sunscreen, and water. Arrive on time for your scheduled entry and follow conservation guidelines at all times.

The updated routes and restrictions in 2025 are designed to strike a balance between conservation of Machu Picchu and a safe, organized visitor experience. While some limitations may apply, careful planning ensures that your journey will be unforgettable. Visiting Machu Picchu is not only about fulfilling a dream but also about respecting and protecting one of the world’s greatest wonders.
